Ghanaian Community in Vancouver mark Ghana’s independence

The Ghanaian Canadian Association of British Columbia (GCABC) held the 58th independence anniversary of Ghana March 14 at the Queensborough Community Centre in New Westminster.

The event was attended by a large number of Ghanaian-Canadians, sister organizations, including the Nigerian Canadian Association, the Guyanese Community Organization and members of the general public.

The Acting Mayor of New Westminster, Patrick Johnstone delivered a goodwill message. Also attending the event were members of the British Columbia Legislative Assembly Bruce Ralston, Harry Bains, and Raj Chouhan.

The main highlight of the anniversary celebration was the first Annual Professional and Community Awards. Eight members of the Ghanaian community were honoured with certificates in recognition of their professional and community services to the Ghanaian community, the province of British Columbia, Canada, and Ghana.

The recipients were: Mr. George Piprah, Honorary Consul-General of Ghana in British Colombia, Dr. Charles Quist-Adade, President of the GCABC and Sociology professor at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Vancouver, BC, Mrs. Judith Lartey, Treasurer of the GCABC, a nurse at the Lions Gate Hospital in Vancouver and the founder of the Ghanaian-Canadian Nurses Association of BC, and Mrs. Mary Frimpong, a nurse at the Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock and a dedicated volunteer of the GCABC.

The rest were Dr. Kwawu Agbemenu, retired Geography professor at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and member of the Advisory Committee of the GCABC, Mrs. Edna Kwadzovia, critical care instructor at the British Columbia Institute of Technology, in management at Fraser Health Authority and Vice president and a co-founder of the Ghana Canada Nurses Association, Pastor Kojo Frempong, who doubles as lawyer and a pastor at the Lighthouse Chapel in Surrey, and Audrey Achah, in-house legal counsel at the BC School Trustees Association, and Secretary of the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers, BC Chapter.
